Dug A Hole
(Patrick Gallagher)
I am a workaholic. I love it when people say to me in passing” take it easy”, or “don’t work too hard”, because it reminds me to lighten up. In “Dug a Hole”, the digging a hole in the dirt is a metaphor for working obsessively. I mention being like my dad, but our society is really about working abnormally long hours. In Europe, they are more relaxed about how much work they do. Must be nice. Also in the song, I am confiding in an old friend, looking for a helping hand, which is always good to have.. Finding myself in a hole is the equivalent of going non-stop until burning out, or getting sick, not slowing down and enjoying the important things in life.
Lyrics
Look’s like I dug myself a big old hole in the ground
My back is burned by the sun, But the dirt is cool and brown
I rip up the roots, and dig up the reasons, that are hidden deep under the ground
Lift me out of this hole I dug, I’m so glad that you’re still in town.
Well I don’t care, and I don’t mind, maybe it was you I was trying to find
I wanna get out and leave this all behind, lift me up……
Have you ever been bored, bored to death?
Let me put down this shovel, and catch my breath
Today the Circus passed through town, I think they needed just one more clown
I know that I could stand a change, But my daddy was a digger, and I am the same
Sometimes forget to have fun, but there’s not much left to dig when the digging’s done
Well I don’t care, and I don’t mind, maybe it was you I was trying to find
I wanna get out and leave this all behind, lift me up…..
Cause I’m digging down and, down and, down and, down…………
